>> Left Eye- Negative Words

In the latest issue of Jet magazine, Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopez has some negative words about her work with Melanie C. Left-Eye raps on Mel's track "Never Be The Same Again" and did a photo shoot with her as well. These negative comments are a bit of a surprise as Melanie had nothing but nice words about working with Left-Eye. Left-Eye said:

"At first I didn't want to do it, the Spice Girls brought girl groups back, but TLC invented them, and if it wasn't for us I strongly doubt the Spice Girls would be around."

This first set of comments is very similar to ones that her fellow TLC member T-Boz made previously. Left-Eye was then asked what she got in return for working with Melanie C, her reply is:

"Well, I don't really want to say, because it will make Melanie sound desperate to snatch me up, but a very high sum of cash was involved."

What about the rumours TLC will be teaming up with the Spice Girls in the near future?  Left-Eye says:

"Not true as far as I'm concerned, but I would really enjoy working with Geri Halliwell, I love her solo stuff, although I liked her hair better when she was Ginger!"

And the pictures Lisa did with Melanie C for a UK photo shoot, how does Left-Eye feel about them?

"Odd. I thought her idea sounded really skanky at first, but I thought about it for a little while, and I decided I would go for it. The newspaper wearing was Melanie's idea, I hated it, but Melanie insisted."

Paul: Wouldn't listen to this- it is rubbish- out of context/ or just totally wrong...

>> Mel C on Internet Rumours

Melanie C talked to LAUNCH recently about the Internet! She talked about it's advantages and it's disadvantages. Melanie said:

I think it's great. I think the Internet, it can be fabulous, but of course it's got its bad points, too. Especially for stuff like that, getting stuff out to the fans, music and videos, I think it's great. But I think the shame about the Internet is that because there are so many like rumours and lies that circulate in Britain, sometimes fans are getting misinformation and sometimes it's a bit of a worry and a little bit frustrating, too. But I think, overall, it's a great thing."

Melanie was asked if the rumours and lies she reads online hurt her on a personal level:

"It does and it doesn't. It can be frustrating, as I say, but you know, it wastes a lot of time and a lot of energy. With our fans, you know a lot of the Spice Girls' fans are quite young, and a lot of the rumours are on the Internet, rumours about the band breaking up and stuff, which are completely untrue. You know, we've never considered breaking up as a band. We're very happy, we're very strong, we're writing our third album at the moment. A lot of our fans are distressed by hearing things like this and it just comes from thoughtless rumours in the press, and then it's worldwide. You've got an interview, a chance to tell everybody about your material, and you spend half the interview just questioning all these rumours that aren't true."

>> Herald Sun Interview

Melanie C has done an interview with Herald Sun (AUS) recently. It is a very interesting read. The Herald Sun seems to keep prying at her with Geri Halliwell questions, perhaps trying to get some juice. She also talks about music in general and reveals that she will release "If That Were Me" as a charity single for the homeless. She also talks about her tattoos and their future. Here is a local copy of the interview:

Black Text = Herald Sun
Blue Text = Melanie C

Do you feel that you have something to prove with your solo career?
I've never had anything to prove to anyone except myself. All I can do is strive to better myself.

You said the Spice Girls' music is "fun music", but your solo album is "the real you".
They're both the real me, but I'm only one quarter of the Spice Girls. I'm 100 percent me. This album is just me.

What's the best rumour you've heard about yourself?
That I'm gay. And I'm not.

The UK press said your image change is an attempt to adopt lesbian chic.
Why would I want people to think I'm gay? I'm having a hard enough time finding a boyfriend as it is. It's ridiculous. There's no marketing plan with me. I've only had my hair cut and people are saying it's this huge image reinvention.

What about the rumour you are dating either Flea or Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers?
I'm friends with both of them, but there's nothing romantic there, but of course if you're seen together you must be dating.

Is Posh Spice anorexic?
Oh my God! You want to see her eat. She's always been very thin, but since she's had the baby her metabolism has changed and she's a bit thinner. But she eats like a horse, the bitch. She eats more than me.

Is she going to do a solo album?
She's in the studio doing a lot of writing now.

What was the last album you bought?
I bought the Beatles' Yellow Submarine soundtrack at Heathrow Airport and the new Supergrass album. I love Supergrass.

What's the most famous phone number you have?
Madonna's. I've got a few famous numbers. I never ring them. I've just got them to show off.

Is there anyone left you'd like to meet?
I want to meet Tina Turner and Michael Jackson.

What was the first gig you saw?
My mum's, she's in a band. I watched her shows as a kid. The first concert I saw was in 1990. It was Madonna's Girlie show at Wembley.

Have you ever thrown a rock star tantrum?
I don't do tantrums. You do get tired, but you can't forget who you are.

What was the most extravagant purchase you've made?
I just bought a new car. A BMW Z3. It's beautiful.

Are you a tax exile?
We spent a tax year out of England, but I'm happy to pay my taxes even though it's a fuck load of money. But I've still got more money than I ever imagined possible.

You played with members of Duran Duran recently. Were you a Duran Duran fan?
No, I was a Wham! fan and you couldn't like both of them.

Have you met George Michael?
Yes (Silence).

Is he a friend?
No. He's Geri's friend (laughs).

Do you have Geri's album?
Yes. I have listened to it. I like her current single (Mi Chico Latino) but I prefer to listen to rock.

Is there a feud between you and her?
No. Me and Geri know each other. We know the truth and we know the press. I adore Geri.. She's still a dear friend. Life's too short to hold grudges.

Thanks to Luke Peterson.

>> Mel C Times Article

Melanie C is on the cover of Australian magazine NW. They did an interview with her when she stopped in Sydney during her World Tour. Here is a local copy of the interview:

Black Text = NW
Blue Text = Melanie C

This Sporty Life

Despite the tattoos, bulging biceps and punk hairstyle, Sporty Spice Melanie C is down to earth, softly spoken and polite - the kind of girl you'd be friends with if she wasn't an international celebrity. Tucked up on a couch in a pair of baggy pants, bare feet and a singlet top in Sydney's Quay Grand Hotel, she opens up to NW's Pip Harry about her physical transformation, why she's addicted to weights and how she'll always be a girly girl at heart.

Do you worry about looking too masculine?

I'm a tomboy, I've always been a tomboy, but no matter how muscular I get, or how many tattoos or how short my hair is, I'm very feminine. I'm very girly and I'm very soft.

Tell me some girly things you're into?

I put nail varnish on and stuff, but I'm really crap at it and I'm not really into clothes. Girly things I'm into ... I'm into boys (laughs). I like cooking. That's girly isn't it? The kitchen is my favourite room in the house. My kitchen's really cool. I like hanging out with girly mates, going to the cinema. I like watching romantic comedy movies.

Have you ever considered going for the high glamour look?

Occasionally I wear shoes and I wear a skirt in the video, but the more muscular I get, I feel like I look silly in dresses. To me comfort is the most important thing. If you feel awkward in something then you don't look good.

How hard have you been hitting the weights room?

I used to do a lot of cardio because I didn't want my vocals to suffer while I was on stage running around and being really energetic. But there's not a lot of me and I wanted to get more muscular. I started doing more weights. I don't know whether it's the adrenaline and endorphins or whatever, but I started to get pretty addicted to it. I like lifting heavy weights. I've got to be strong and look after myself, because all the press are out to get me (laughs).

Are you strict with your gym routine?

I work out intensely but I don't make myself go to the gym, I just enjoy it. It also helps jet lag, helps me de-stress and keep focused. When I was in LA I was doing a lot of yoga as well. Which I find really helps. In the studio I sung better after I'd just done yoga. I just got really good headspace.

How was your time in LA?

We rented a house in West Hollywood, up in the hills. It was perfect for my lifestyle. There were loads of gyms, loads of studios and the weather's great. You can go out running on the beach, you could go rollerblading, surfing. It was paradise. My work schedule was pretty intense, but I had a lot of fun. I went to movie premieres, met Adam Sandler, went to a Lenny Kravitz gig and got to speak to him.

Do you see yourself there on a permanent basis?

I do like it a lot, but I've got a flat in London and Liverpool, so I spend time in lots of different places. I don't see myself anywhere permanently because I'm going to be on the road so much.

What was a typical day in LA?

I'd train most mornings, drive down to Santa Monica and go running, do kickboxing or yoga. Then I'd come back, lie by the pool, go to the studio in the afternoon. I'd be there through the evening, and usually I'd be so exhausted I'd go straight to bed.

Do you have your own chef?

Yes, I do have a chef when I travel. In Australia and in America you can generally get good food, but in some places, like Europe, the food can sometimes be pretty shit. And at least if I have a chef, I know I'm getting what I need to stay fit and healthy. I'm very health conscious. I eat loads of fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood. I eat loads of protein - but I'm not that strict because I want to try different things in different countries.

How upsetting are the gay rumours?

So many women I speak to, successful, beautiful women, haven't had a relationship in ages. When it happens, it happens. But because I'm in the public eye, there's been this great hoo ha about it.

Have you been too honest, too open in your lyrics?

I did what I had to do. I wrote the songs I wanted to write. But listening back you do go, 'Oh shit, Everyone's gonna know exactly where I'm coming from, exactly what I'm talking about.' But people also make it relevant to their own situations. I like that about songs, that you can read what you like into it.

A lot of questions have been directed at your image change. Has it been deliberate?

It wasn't a conscious thing but the timing was just perfect. It all happened around the time that the album was coming together. The media has made a big deal about the haircut and the tattoos and stuff, but it's done me a favour, because it's brought attention to the album.

Describe your style?

Scruffy, but comfy. I like to be comfortable and clean, that's important. The music you listen to influences what you wear - so maybe I'm a bit indie. I like my trainers and the casual look. Indie-casual-rock-chick, that's my style. I can't be bothered with makeup but I think it's nice when you have a special occasion to get dressed up. But if you look like that every day then you don't look special, do you?

Are you going to get more tattoos?

I always wanted a tattoo when I was growing up. Then I got it and I was hooked. I've had one new tattoo lately.

Do you enjoy the pain involved?

For me, it is a funny thing. You do get a bit horny. But I think it's an adrenaline thing. You feel like you've earned them. When the tattoo is finished you feel like you deserve it. It's like meditating really, because it is very painful, some of them more than others, and you can feel every stroke of the needle.

Thanks to Luke Peterson.

>> Nervous Mel

Melanie C spoke to MTV News a day before her New York concert about just how nervous she gets. Mel said:

"Whatever I'm doing, no matter if I'm performing or whether I've got an interview, I always get nervous, but to what degree? It differs. With the girls, the girls take the Mickey out of me, actually, because I do get so nervous. They think it's quite funny. I go all quiet, and I have to sit in a corner and get all calm, but on my own it's double. Sometimes I think I'm going to get adrenaline poisoning because I can feel it pumping through my veins, and I know Friday night's going to be no different, Chisholm said. In fact, Friday night's going to be huge, because America... I don't know, there's just something about America. It excites me so much and I love spending time here and to be accepted here is really important to me. So on Friday night, I'm going to be on the toilet every five minutes."

MTV News also reported that Melanie plans to return to the US in February 2000 for a full-blown solo tour. I wouldn't accept the accuracy of this fully yet as it is possible that MTV has their info wrong. aka it didn't come out of Mel's mouth.
